RetroSound Motor 1B vs 2B vs 4HD
Important: This guide explains RetroSound Motor option tiers so you can choose features before you order. Vintage Car Radio sells RetroSound radios as an authorized dealer. We do not offer vehicle installation. Feature details below follow Retro Manufacturing’s published Motor 1B / 2B / 4HD information and the Motor option copy on our product pages. No prices are listed here—see each product page for current options.
RetroSound radios separate looks from electronics. The layout face (DIN face, vehicle-specific RetroRadio face, knobs, and bezel) controls how the radio sits in the dash. The Motor is the electronics module that sets power, inputs, outputs, and advanced features. On Vintage Car Radio listings that offer a Motor option, you typically choose among Motor 1B, Motor 2B, and Motor 4HD.
What Every Motor Shares
Per Retro Manufacturing, all current RetroSound motors include:
- Built-in Bluetooth® for wireless music streaming and hands-free calling (microphone included)
- AM/FM RDS tuner with presets and selectable regional tuner frequencies
- A built-in amplifier (power rating depends on the motor tier)
- Non-volatile memory for presets and sound settings
- A modular design that pairs with the face and hardware for your radio model
Assembly of face and motor is part of the RetroSound design—read the product manual before you install. Twelve-volt negative-ground systems only unless a listing says otherwise.
Motor 1B — Essential Bluetooth
Motor 1B is the foundation tier. It is aimed at simple systems and classic vehicles that will use factory-style or lightly upgraded speakers.
Best for: stock or replacement speakers, Bluetooth streaming and hands-free calling, and installs that do not need USB media or RCA expansion.
Highlights (manufacturer):
- Bluetooth® 5.0 with microphone for calls
- AM/FM RDS with 30 presets
- Single auxiliary input for a portable device
- White display illumination only
- Built-in amplifier rated 275 W peak / 18 W RMS × 4 (TrueRating™)
- Manufacturer warranty: 1 year (Retro Manufacturing, when purchased from an authorized dealer)
Choose 1B when you want Bluetooth and a clean AM/FM experience without paying for USB, color display options, or pre-amp expansion you will not use.
Motor 2B — Most Popular Balance
Motor 2B is RetroSound’s most popular upgrade for classic cars and trucks. It adds power headroom, USB, and expandability for amplifiers or a subwoofer, plus a selectable multi-color display.
Best for: aftermarket or upgraded speakers, louder/cleaner listening without an external amp (or with one later), systems that may add a sub, and owners who want display color to match gauge lighting.
Highlights (manufacturer):
- Everything in the shared Bluetooth / AM/FM RDS baseline
- USB port for media playback and device charging (manufacturer lists 2.1 A charging on this tier)
- Dual RCA pre-outs plus a dedicated subwoofer output
- Built-in amplifier rated 300 W peak / 25 W RMS × 4 (TrueRating™)
- Adjustable / selectable multi-color display illumination
- Manufacturer warranty: 1 year
On many Vintage Car Radio RetroSound product pages, Motor 2B is the default storefront selection because it covers the features most street-driven classics actually use. Confirm the option menu on the listing you are buying—availability can vary by radio model.
Motor 4HD — Flagship Digital
Motor 4HD is the flagship digital motor for owners who want maximum control and broadcast options.
Best for: HD Radio® listening where available, SiriusXM-Ready® integration (tuner sold separately), dual USB connectivity, and exclusive RetroSound Radio App control on the current app-enabled Motor 4HD version.
Highlights (manufacturer):
- HD Radio® Technology
- SiriusXM-Ready® (compatible tuner sold separately; regional notes apply)
- RetroSound Radio App compatibility (current app-enabled Motor 4HD / related current part markings—confirm on the unit and box labels if you are identifying a motor you already own)
- Two USB ports for media and charging
- Dual RCA pre-outs, dedicated subwoofer output, adjustable color display
- Built-in amplifier rated 300 W peak / 25 W RMS × 4 (TrueRating™)
- Manufacturer warranty: 2 years on Motor 4HD per Retro Manufacturing’s published motor feature lists

How to Choose on This Store
- Pick the radio face that fits your dash (DIN face such as Liberty/Europa-style listings, or a vehicle-specific RetroRadio for supported years).
- Open the Motor option on the product page and choose 1B, 2B, or 4HD based on the table above—not on a guess about “M2 vs M4” nicknames alone.
- Plan speakers at the same time. A higher motor into a single worn dash speaker will not sound like a system upgrade—see Speakers & Wiring Basics and the Classic Car Dash Speaker Buyers Guide.
- Read Specs, Manuals, and FAQ tabs on the listing for depth, shaft, and wiring notes before you order.

Ordering and Fulfillment Notes
Vintage Car Radio carries RetroSound as an authorized dealer. Many RetroSound SKUs on this store use the same manufacturer-direct / dropship-style inventory pattern used for other specialty lines (product-level tracking with manufacturer fulfillment). That means ship timing can depend on Retro Manufacturing stock—check the product page or call before a hard deadline. We do not invent MAP rules or unpublished pricing in this guide; option pricing lives on each product page.
Installation Reminder
RetroSound motors and faces require correct power (constant, accessory, and ground), antenna, and speaker wiring. Bench-test when you can. Cutting harnesses, USB, AUX, or antenna leads in ways the manufacturer forbids can affect warranty. Vintage Car Radio does not install radios in vehicles—DIY or hire a local installer.
