- FMVSS 209 and 302 rated
Caprice buyers in the late sixties wanted Cadillac comfort with a Chevrolet badge, and most of them got a deep, plush front bench. This single belt replaces one outboard position on that bench in a 1967-1973 Caprice with a retracting lap-and-shoulder design and an all-metal push button latch.
Vehicle Fit
Seatbelt Planet lists it for Caprice models built from 1967 through 1973, for either the driver or the front passenger. Order one per side. A front center lap belt and a rear kit for the Caprice are also offered separately, so you can outfit the whole car in one shade.
Choosing a Color
The webbing chart runs to fifty-two hues. Thirteen premium tones cost a few dollars more. Caprice interiors often wore rich colors like midnight blue, dark green, black and a soft gold, all easy to approximate.
Why Upgrade?
Early shoulder harnesses in these cars were separate straps that clipped to the lap belt, and many owners never used them. A single retracting three-point belt is far more convenient, so it actually gets worn.
Maintenance
A soft cloth dampened with water removes most marks from the strap. Avoid solvents, which can weaken the fibers, and let any wet webbing dry before allowing it to reel in.
About the Chevrolet Caprice
Chevrolet introduced the Caprice as a trim package on the 1965 Impala, then made it a separate top-of-the-line model the following year. By 1971 the full-size Chevrolet had grown to its largest dimensions, and the Caprice was its most luxurious version, with extra sound deadening and upscale trim.
Before You Install
Find where the shoulder strap will anchor. Sedans have a B-pillar that makes the job straightforward, while two-door hardtops and the Caprice coupe need a solid point on the roof rail or rear quarter. Inspect the floor anchor for rust, too.
Good to Know
Hardware comes with the belt, which helps when original bolts are corroded.
Owners who use their Caprice for long highway cruises will notice how much more comfortable a retracting belt is than a fixed lap belt. It allows you to lean forward to adjust the radio or reach the glovebox, then locks firmly if the car stops suddenly.
Because the Caprice was the luxury Chevrolet, many have well-preserved interiors with original upholstery. Pick a strap shade that complements the existing seat fabric so the new belt looks at home.
Wagon versions, sold as the Caprice Estate from 1969, share the front bench layout and may use this belt; check the anchors before ordering.
If you are buying for both sides, order two at once so the webbing comes from the same batch and matches perfectly.
Coupe owners should take extra care to choose an upper anchor that keeps the strap from rubbing on the door glass when the window is rolled down.
