Product Description
The Custom Autosound No Noise Filter (part number NONOISE) is a power-line filter for one of the most annoying problems after a new stereo goes in: a whine that rises and falls with engine speed. Custom Autosound's advice is simple. If you hear unwanted motor whine or engine noise after installing a new system, check all the grounds on the radio, amplifier, antenna and so on first. If the noise is still there, this filter may help.
What Causes Engine Whine
Alternator whine is electrical noise that rides on the car's power wiring. As the alternator spins faster, the pitch of the noise climbs, which is why it follows the engine as you rev it. Older cars are especially prone to it. Their wiring has aged, ground straps may be corroded, and many have been rewired at least once over the decades. A modern radio with more power and better speakers can also make noise easier to hear than it was with the original radio.
Check the Grounds First
Most noise problems come from a poor ground, so start there before adding any filter:
- Make sure the radio's ground wire goes to clean, bare metal and is tight
- Check the ground on any amplifier and keep its power and ground wires short
- Make sure the antenna is grounded at the fender or cowl
- Look at the engine-to-body and battery ground straps for corrosion
- Keep power wires and signal cables apart where you can
Fixing a single bad ground often cures the noise completely. If you have done all of this and the whine remains, the No Noise Filter is the next step.
How the Filter Helps
The filter goes into the radio's power lead, where it helps block the noise riding on that wire before it reaches the radio. It is made for the kind of noise that follows engine speed, so it is the right tool for alternator whine and similar sounds.
What It Will Not Fix
The filter is for noise that comes in through the power wiring. It will not remove radio static. Static on AM or FM usually comes from a weak station, the reception where you are driving or an antenna problem, and that is a separate issue. If you hear hiss only on certain stations or in certain places, look at the antenna and its connection rather than the power supply.
Installation
Mounting is straightforward. The filter can be secured under a body panel bolt near the radio, and its wiring can be tucked into the existing harness so it stays neat. Disconnect the battery before you begin, connect the filter in the radio's power lead, and test the system with the engine running before you put trim back in place. If you are not comfortable working on the car's wiring, a qualified installer can do it quickly.
Who It Is For
The No Noise Filter is a smart part to keep on hand when installing a Custom Autosound radio or any new stereo in a classic car or truck, especially one with original wiring. It is inexpensive insurance against a noise problem that can otherwise spoil a good install.
