Product Description
Aurora Design HPC-1 High Power Voltage Converter for 6V and Positive-Ground Classics
The HPC-1 is Aurora Design's power converter for cars with original 6-volt or 12-volt positive-ground systems, or 6-volt negative-ground systems. The FMR-3.2 receiver runs on 8.5-16.0V DC, so these vehicles need a separate supply, and the HPC-1 is the one Aurora Design specifies for the FMR-3.2. Aurora Design says it delivers 70% more power than competing converters, which makes both two-speaker and four-speaker installations practical.
The Problem It Solves
Owners of 6-volt and positive-ground vehicles used to be stuck with weak sound from their converted radios because available converters couldn't supply enough power. The HPC-1 can fully drive two 4-ohm speakers, or four speakers at reduced power.
Performance
- Up to 56W output from a 6V positive-ground system with the engine at fast idle
- Up to 90W output from a 6V negative-ground system with the engine at fast idle
- High-efficiency synchronous design for low power loss
- Filtered on all connections, with proprietary EMI reduction circuitry
Thanks to its filtering and EMI reduction, the HPC-1 provides a very clean output without large external filters that waste power. That matters in a classic car, where electrical noise can easily creep into AM reception.
Protection Built In
The HPC-1 has full reverse-battery and transient protection. A low-voltage lockout circuit makes sure the converter always operates properly, so a weak battery won't cause blown fuses or a damaged converter. Those protections fit the rest of the FMR-3.2 system, which is built to withstand reverse battery, load dump and double-battery jump starts.
Simple Installation
One HPC-1 board covers every installation it supports, so you don't need different versions for different vehicles. Its very small size and low EMI let it mount directly inside the converted radio, which keeps the installation tidy and hidden. There's no separate box under the dash.
Where It Fits in an Aurora Design System
The HPC-1 is listed among Aurora Design's optional FMR-3.2 accessories, along with the FMR-DRH1/DRD1 digital radio modules, the FMR-CM2 courtesy module, the FMR-MC1 motor controller and the FMR-HV1 high-voltage relay driver. A typical 6-volt build might combine an FMR-3.2 receiver, the HPC-1 converter and a BTU Smart-3.2 or BTL Smart-3.2 for Bluetooth, all hidden inside the original radio.
Quality
Like all Aurora Design products, the HPC-1 is designed to SAE specifications and built in the USA in an ISO 9001:2000 facility.
Not sure your vehicle needs the HPC-1? If your car is 6-volt, either ground, or 12-volt positive ground and you plan to install an FMR-3.2, it does. Sold and shipped by Vintage Car Radio. Contact our team with your vehicle's voltage and ground polarity, and we'll help confirm the right setup.
HPC-1 High Power Voltage Converter: Your Questions Answered
When do I need this converter?
If you're installing an Aurora Design FMR-3.2 in a 6-volt car of either ground polarity, or a 12-volt positive-ground car, you need the HPC-1.
Where is it built?
Aurora Design products are designed to SAE specifications and built in the USA in an ISO 9001 facility.
Does it support Bluetooth streaming?
Yes. This HPC-1 High Power Voltage Converter is Aurora Design's Bluetooth adapter for the FMR-3.2.
How much power can it deliver on a 6-volt system?
Aurora Design rates it at up to 56W from a 6V positive-ground system and up to 90W from a 6V negative-ground system, both with the engine at fast idle.
What happens if my battery is weak or hooked up backward?
The HPC-1 has reverse-battery and transient protection, plus a low-voltage lockout that keeps a weak battery from blowing fuses or damaging the converter.
