Product Description
Aurora Design FMR-HV1 High Voltage Relay Driver for Wonderbar® Seek Relays
The FMR-HV1 is a small add-on module that lets Aurora Design's FMR-3.2 receiver work with the high-voltage seek relays used in Delco® E- and F-Series Wonderbar® and similar signal-seeking radios. Many late-1950s Delco® Wonderbar® radios used a seek relay that needs far more voltage than a modern circuit normally supplies. The FMR-HV1 provides that voltage so the original signal-seeking mechanism works as designed.
How It Works
The FMR-HV1 is a current-limited supply that works with both low-impedance and high-impedance relays. Its 52V open-circuit output lets even high-impedance relays operate normally, so you don't have to weaken the relay's return spring to make it pull in. That keeps the original seek mechanism adjusted the way the factory intended.
Quiet on the AM Band
Some competing supplies switch at 20-40kHz, which can spread noise across the AM band. The FMR-HV1 uses an automotive switching regulator running at 2MHz. Because that frequency is above the AM band, the FMR-HV1 can't interfere with AM reception, which is important in a radio built to pull in distant AM stations.
Easy to Install
- Fully self-contained, with no external components
- Wires directly between the FMR receiver and the seek relay
- Very small and efficient, so it mounts almost anywhere inside the radio
- Designed to SAE specifications
- Designed and built in the USA in an ISO 9001:2000 facility
Part of the FMR-3.2 System
Aurora Design lists the FMR-HV1 as an optional accessory for the FMR-3.2 AM/FM receiver. The FMR-3.2 fully supports signal-seeking radios, including Wonderbar®, Town & Country and Electro-Touch. Press Seek once for the next station, or twice to scan with an 8-second pause on each. The receiver's own seek relay output is a 60V inductive driver rated at 1.0A with short-circuit protection. For Wonderbar® designs that need the higher-voltage relay, the FMR-HV1 is the matching part.
Related Aurora Design Options
If your signal-seeking radio has worn limit switches or relay contacts, look at the FMR-MC1 Motor Controller, which drives the seek motor directly and removes the original limit switches and relays. Six-volt and positive-ground cars also need the HPC-1 High Power Voltage Converter to run the FMR-3.2.
Who Needs One?
You need the FMR-HV1 if you are converting a Delco® E- or F-Series Wonderbar®, or a similar radio with a high-voltage seek relay, using an FMR-3.2. Most manually tuned radios and many other signal seekers don't need it.
Sold and shipped by Vintage Car Radio. Contact our team with your radio's model number if you're not sure your Wonderbar® uses the high-voltage relay.
FMR-HV1 High Voltage Relay Driver FAQ
Do I keep my original radio face?
Aurora Design's FMR-3.2 goes inside your original radio chassis. The dash still shows the factory radio face.
What speakers will it drive?
Aurora Design rates the FMR-3.2 to drive modern speakers; check the product description for the exact speaker and power guidance for your install.
Do I need a voltage converter?
The FMR-3.2 runs on about 8.5–16V DC. For 6-volt cars, or 12-volt positive-ground cars, Aurora Design specifies the HPC-1 high-power converter.
Is this made in the USA?
Aurora Design products are designed to SAE specifications and built in the USA in an ISO 9001 facility.
