Square-body Suburbans with a front bench can carry three people up front, and the outboard belts take most of the daily wear. This retractable 3-point belt replaces either the driver or passenger belt on a 1977-1991 Suburban bench.
Vehicle Fit
Seatbelt Planet lists it for every Suburban from 1977 through 1991 with a front bench seat. Hardware is included. It covers one outboard position, so order a second for the other side or choose the three-position bench kit.
Choosing a Color
Fifty-two webbing shades are offered, thirteen with a surcharge. Blue, saddle, red and charcoal were common Suburban interior colors and all have close matches.
Why Upgrade?
Suburbans were family haulers and work rigs, and many have been in continuous use for decades. Outboard bench belts in these trucks often retract poorly or show heavy fraying where they rub the seat side.
Maintenance
Keep the belt from rubbing on the seat's outer edge when buckled. Wash the strap with lukewarm water and mild soap if it gets dirty, then air dry.
About the Chevrolet Suburban
These Suburbans shared their cab and front end with the Chevy C/K pickups of the same era, and they could seat up to nine with optional rear benches. Many are now restored as classic towing and camping rigs.
Before You Install
Slide the bench forward and look at the floor anchor and the upper anchor on the pillar. Clean the threads and inspect the metal for rust.
Good to Know
If only one side has worn out, this single belt is a cost-effective fix.
Owners often replace the driver belt first because it gets used every trip, then add the passenger side later in the same color.
With fresh retractors on both outboard positions, the bench looks cleaner because the belts stay off the floor when not in use.
Suburbans built in the late seventies and eighties were often equipped with heavy-duty options for towing campers and boats. If yours is used that way, reliable front belts matter on long highway runs with a heavy load behind you.
Inspect the seat itself while the belt is off. A loose or worn bench mount lets the seat shift, which can change where the belt sits on your body. Tightening the bench mounts before installing the belt helps everything fit properly.
If you later decide to redo the whole front bench, the three-position kit uses the same buckle style, so the belts will match.
A worn front belt in a Suburban is easy to overlook because the truck is so roomy, but it is the belt that protects the driver every day. A fresh one also removes the rattle and slack that tired retractors often develop.
