Product Description
Not every seat belt needs an elaborate mounting kit. Many lap belts, harnesses and non-retractable belts simply need a pair of good bolts, nuts, lock washers and backing plates. Seatbelt Planet Hardware Kit #2 provides exactly that, and this listing also lets you step up to Grade 8 strength with Kit #8.
Choose Grade 5 or Grade 8
The Grade menu offers two versions:
- Hardware Kit #2, Grade 5 strength
- Hardware Kit #8, Grade 8 strength
Both kits contain the same parts. Seatbelt Planet notes that the Grade 8 version is typically used to mount seat belt anchors to a single bolt hole, where all of the load passes through one fastener. Grade 8 bolts are harder and stronger than Grade 5, which is why they are often chosen for those situations.
What Is in Each Kit
- 2 x 7/16"-20 x 1.5" bolts
- 2 x 7/16" hex nuts
- 2 x lock washers
- 2 x 2.5" reinforcement plates
The 7/16"-20 fine thread is the standard seat belt anchor size used in American vehicles.
Which Belts It Works With
Seatbelt Planet lists Kit #2 for use with:
- 2-point non-retractable lap belts
- 2-point retractable lap belts
- 3-point non-retractable lap and shoulder belts
- 4-point harnesses
- 4-point "Y" harnesses
For a typical lap belt with two bolt-down ends, one kit covers one belt. Harnesses and three-point belts may need more than one kit depending on how many anchor points they use, so count your mounting points before ordering. The How Many menu lets you order up to four kits.
Why Reinforcement Plates Matter
Most floor pans in older cars are thin sheet metal. A bolt through bare sheet metal can tear out under crash loads. The 2.5" reinforcement plate goes on the underside of the floor and spreads the load over a much larger area. It is the part of the kit that makes the biggest difference when you are creating a new anchor point in a car that never had belts.
Installation Tips
Choose mounting points on solid, rust-free metal and look underneath before drilling to avoid fuel lines, brake lines and wiring. Place the reinforcement plate on the underside, add the lock washer and nut, and tighten securely. Position the anchors so the lap belt sits low across the hips when fastened. If you are unsure whether to use Grade 5 or Grade 8, or whether a location is strong enough, ask a qualified shop.
A Simple, Important Part
Good hardware is easy to overlook, but it is what connects the belt to the car. Using matched, correctly graded parts takes the guesswork out of any installation and helps the belt do its job.
