Product Description
Many classic cars were built before seat belts were required, so they have no factory anchor points for belts, or only lap belt anchors with nothing for a shoulder belt. The Seatbelt Planet Seat Belt Mounting Bracket set gives you threaded anchor plates to create proper mounting points where none exist.
What It Is
These are threaded mounting plates designed to sit behind the panel and accept a standard seat belt bolt. Specifications from the listing:
- Size: 1.5" x 3"
- 7/16"-20 fine threaded hole
- Yellow zinc plated
- Sold as a set of 2
The 7/16"-20 thread is the standard seat belt anchor size, so these plates work with typical seat belt bolts and end fittings.
Where They Are Used
Seatbelt Planet notes that these mounting plates are for use where original factory mounts are not available in older vehicles. The plate must be used under the floor panel and/or behind the door panel (for 3-point belts). That means the plate sits on the far side of the sheet metal, and the belt bolt threads into it from the inside of the car. The plate spreads the load over a wider area than a nut alone would.
Always Use Factory Mounts When You Can
Seatbelt Planet's guidance is clear: factory mounting points should ALWAYS be used if they are available. Factory anchors were engineered and reinforced for seat belt loads. Mounting plates like these are for vehicles that do not have factory anchors at the locations you need.
Typical Applications
- Adding lap belts to a car built without them
- Adding an upper shoulder belt anchor on a pillar or behind a door panel
- Creating anchors in a custom build or hot rod
- Replacing an anchor point after rust repair
Installation Tips
Choose locations where the metal is solid and, ideally, where there is underlying structure such as a pillar, rocker or crossmember. Check behind the panel before drilling to avoid wiring, fuel lines and brake lines. Drill a hole sized for the bolt, position the plate behind the panel, and thread the belt bolt into it with the belt fitting and any washers in place. Tighten securely. For upper shoulder belt anchors, the location should put the belt over the collarbone, not the neck. If you are not sure a location is strong enough, consult a qualified shop before installing.
Why a Set of 2
Most belt installations need anchors in pairs, such as both ends of a lap belt or matching anchors on each side of the car. A set of two keeps your installation consistent.
