Product Description
The first Mustangs, from the 1964-1/2 launch through 1966, started the pony car era, and they remain some of the most popular classics to restore and drive. The Custom Autosound USA-230 for the 1964.5-66 Mustang fits the factory dash opening and adds modern AM/FM plus an auxiliary input.
Fits the Early Mustang Dash
This version is made for 1964-1/2 to 1966 Mustangs, so it lines up with the original radio opening. The order form asks for:
- Factory Air: Yes or No
- Voltage: 6 or 12
- Ground: Negative or Positive
Factory air changes the space behind the dash, so that answer helps us send the right setup. The radio itself runs on 12-volt negative ground.
USA-230 at a Glance
- Black or chrome face
- AM/FM stereo with an electronic tuner
- 16 presets (12 FM and 4 AM)
- 200 watts (50 watts x 4)
- Rear RCA auxiliary input, with an RCA to 1/8" pin jack cable included
- 4-channel RCA pre-outs
- 4-way fader
- Digital clock
- Power antenna lead
The USA-230 has the same styling as the USA-630 without USB or CD changer control. There's no cassette, but the rear auxiliary input works with a phone, MP3 player or satellite radio tuner.
Speakers, Kick Panels and Antenna
Add any of these to your order:
- Front dual voice coil speaker for the dash location
- Rear 6x9 speaker pair, Custom Autosound or upgraded Pioneer
- Kick panels with speakers, without speakers or with a Pioneer upgrade
- Hideaway antenna
Kick panels are one of the most popular upgrades for early Mustangs because they add front speakers without cutting the doors.
Warranty
Custom Autosound radios sold by Vintage Car Radio carry a 2-year warranty.
A Good Fit for a Driver
Early Mustangs are meant to be driven. With 50 watts per channel, 16 presets and pre-outs for an amplifier, the USA-230 gives you everything you need for regular cruising, while the face keeps the dash looking like a 1960s Ford.
Before You Install
Use a fused power source and solid ground, and bench test first. An auto radio specialist can install it if you prefer. Vintage Car Radio sells the radio and accessories but does not offer installation.
Pick Your Face
The USA-230 comes with a black or chrome face. Many early Mustang owners choose chrome to match the bright trim of the dash, while black suits Pony interiors and darker dashes. Either choice gives you a clear digital display, a clock and 16 presets, all in a radio that looks at home in a first-generation Mustang.

Suggested order for a 1964-66 Mustang
- Disconnect the vehicle battery before any wiring.
- Connect ground first, then constant (yellow) and ignition (red).
- Connect the antenna plug and the blue power-antenna lead if your car has a power antenna.
- Wire all four speakers, matching polarity.
- If using an amplifier, run RCA cables from the front/rear (and sub on USA-740) pre-outs.
- Reconnect the battery and test radio, speakers, and charging system voltage.
Tech tips for 1964-66 Mustang
- This radio is sold for the factory Mustang opening used in 1964-66 models—do not cut a modern DIN rectangle if you want a stock look.
- A poor ground is the most common cause of whine or weak audio; scrape paint at the ground point and use a star washer.
- If AM reception is weak, check the antenna mast, cable continuity, and that the antenna plug is fully seated.
- Vintage Car Radio does not install radios. If you are not comfortable with 12V wiring, use a qualified installer.
